Hockey legend Wayne Gretzky finally got an offer on his vast Westlake Village home Los Angeles County, scoring him $5.85 million in the bag. The home had actually been teetering around on the market on and off for the past three years when it was initially listed for $10.5 million.
The Canadian – who famously played for both the Edmonton Oilers and the Los Angeles Kings in the NHL – bought the home with his wife, actress Janet Jones, back in 2009 for $2.765 million, earning him a handsome profit.
The five-bedroom, eight-bathroom house is situated in a private gated community at Sherwood Country Club, with a fabulous row of mountains serving as the home’s backdrop. Just before the home’s grand front door – which resembles something of a pantheon – is a fabulous front courtyard equipped with a classic fountain.
The enormous gourmet kitchen is decked out in white cabinets, black granite counters, an industrial-style black ceiling, subway-style backsplash, stainless steel appliances, and even a central fireplace flanked by a natural stone wall.
A sitting area features built-ins on either side, which then leads into another living area equipped with a fireplace, wood beamed ceiling, gorgeous chandelier, striking black walls, and folding glass doors that lead to the outdoor living space.
The master bedroom suite offers the new owners an ensuite bathroom, fireplace, and glass doors that lead to the outdoors.
Perhaps one of the most impressive rooms in the 8,711-square-foot single-story home is the entertaining room, which is splattered with rich dark walls, an incredible detailed ceiling, fireplace, built-in wine rack, mini bar, and the focal point – a large-scale painting of the “Great One” himself.
Lavish features scattered about include coffered ceilings, decadent chandeliers, distressed hardwood flooring, wood-paneled walls, elaborate crown moulding, opulent wainscoting, and bold dark and light contrasting colors throughout.
The home also comes with a guesthouse with its own bedroom and kitchen. The new owners will also enjoy the home’s gym and sauna.
The outdoor area can be easily accessed by the home’s many folding glass doors, and features a swimming pool, spa, dining area, grilling station, fireplace, and even a flatscreen TV.
Time will tell where Mr. Gretzky will be spending more of his time. It was recently announced that he would be returning as a vice-chairman and a partner in the Edmonton Oilers Entertainment Group. It seems fitting, considering that is where it all started for the world’s greatest hockey player.
