los angeles outdoor movie

If there are two staples of Southern California living that stick out in the mind of the public more than anything else, it might be the year-round beautiful weather and the proximity of the movie and entertainment industry. Lucky for Los Angeles home owners, many organizations around the city are committed to combining these two factors for an unforgettable experience that has brought residents out in droves.

Outdoor movie screenings have been a popular pastime among Los Angeles home owners and their families. This summer, many screenings have been expanded, giving residents the chance to watch some of their favorite classics, or even some new flicks, amid the backdrop of some of the city’s most iconic monuments.

Here are a few places you can catch an outdoor movie screening around Los Angeles this summer.

Street Food Cinema

This traveling festival of sorts takes place all over Los Angeles and the surrounding suburbs, but it is well worth the effort it takes to track it down. Street Food Cinema combines three iconic Southern California experiences: pop culture film, gourmet food trucks and progressive new music. This is one of the few outdoor movie experiences that actually charges admission, but each event features a film as well as a live music performance from emerging local bands. Some of the locations on the docket for this season include Exposition Park in Los Angeles, Victory Park in Pasadena and Glendale Central Park.

Silver Lake Picture Show

One of the most popular outdoor movie screening series in the area is the Silver Lake Picture Show, which transforms the Sunset Triangle Plaza every other Thursday evening through the summer into a fabulous outdoor movie theater. This community event is free to the public and is a great place to get out and meet neighbors from Silver Lake, Los Feliz, Echo Park and beyond. Some of the titles slated to grace the silver screen in Silver Lake this season include “Spaceballs,” “Homeward Bound” and “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.”

Alcove Movie Nights

The Alcove Cafe and Bakery in Los Feliz will be hosting a screening on the third Monday of every month starting in May and going through September. Patrons can grab a table and enjoy dinner and cocktails while taking in some classic films like “The Devil Wears Prada,” “Rocky” and “Mean Girls.”

Cinespia

Los Angeles’ most unique movie-viewing experience might just be the Cinespia series, which takes place at one of Hollywood’s most star-studded of cemeteries: Hollywood Forever Cemetery. In addition to screening a film, the events also feature DJs, themed photo booths and occasional visits by stars, directors and filmmakers, who are all among the living of course.
