Olympic gold medalist Greg Louganis is diving into the Malibu market by listing his multimillion-dollar home.
Louganis, who has won gold medals in diving in the 1984 and 1988 Olympics, had tested the waters earlier this year by putting the property up for rent asking for a cool $15,000 a month. However, Louganis has officially put the house on the market and is asking for $2,999,999, just one dollar shy of $3 million.
The home is situated in the ultra-exclusive gated community of Malibu Hills. Its location high in the hills allows for magnificent views of the Pacific Ocean and the surrounding mountain ranges. A long driveway off of the quiet main road leads to the perfectly secluded hideaway which sits on 1.26 acres of property.
The home was built in 1980 and Louganis has owned it since purchasing it during his diving hey-day in 1985. In 2006, Louganis began a painstaking reconstruction of parts of the house due to a reported black mold problem. The issue ended up being entirely fabricated by an over-zealous and substandard contractor, something Louganis learned well after the project was in the works.
After several years of living in a half demoed house, Louganis finally was able to re-establish his home equity loan and fund the construction to return it to its original splendor just last year.
“I have been a little sad about the whole prospect of renting it out, but then I started remembering all the things that happened in the house,” Louganis said in an essay for the Huffington Post about the troubled history of the home. “So much LIFE! Now I am at a place in my mind’s eyes to be able to share that joy, because it is a spectacular spot.”
Malibu Home Sports Olympic Sized Pool and Other Features
The home itself has about 3,385 square feet of interior space on an open floor plan. The lavish home includes an extensive kitchen, formal dining room, three bedrooms, four bathrooms and a guest house. The master bedroom is spacious, yet very intimate with a sitting area and fireplace. The family and living rooms also have fireplaces and plenty of space for entertaining.
Perhaps the most impressive selling point of this property is the multi-leveled “entertainer’s” deck out in back. From its various layers that are etched into the Malibu hills, the deck offers spectacular views of the classic California scenery.
Being a noted diver and avid swimmer, Louganis had a custom swimming pool and diving platform installed on the property. The bottom of the pool, which has brilliant blue tiling, bears the ringed insignia of the Olympics.
After retiring from diving, Louganis became active in coaching young divers and training dogs for agility competitions. He has published two books including a memoir that spent five weeks on top of the New York Times Best Seller list called “Breaking the Surface.”
