No list of the top suburbs of the city of Los Angeles would be complete without the beautiful community of Manhattan Beach. It is one of the three beach cities that make up the South Bay area. The ocean breezes throughout Manhattan Beach provide residents with clean air and summer temperatures that are 10 to 20 degrees cooler than the more inland regions of Southern California. This ideal weather has led to a community of people who enjoy the outdoors more than almost anything.
The city has a total area of 4.9 square miles, featuring 2.1 miles of some of the most beautiful beaches in southern California. In fact, “GQ Magazine” named Manhattan Beach one of the nation’s six best beaches in their July 2014 issue. A range of high-profile people in the sports and the entertainment industry reside in Manhattan Beach due to its oceanfront location, top performing school district, and quick commuting distance to Los Angeles.
Downtown Manhattan Beach serves as the pulse of the beautiful beach town and is home to chic shopping, award-winning restaurants and chefs, industry-leading beachfront dining options and some of the most amazing sunsets you will ever see.
Families can visit the Roundhouse Aquarium at the end of the historic Manhattan Beach Pier. Make sure to take in the Volleyball Walk of Fame. Some of the other exciting ways to spend a day include sitting fireside in Metlox Plaza, riding bikes down the paved beachfront bike path, surfing epic waves or spending a relaxing day on one of the many gorgeous beaches. Surfing and beach volleyball are top draws to this thriving community of outdoor lovers.
You can find spas, salons and yoga studios on almost every block of the downtown area. Manhattan Beach is home to fun community events like the Manhattan Open (the “Wimbledon of Beach Volleyball”) or the Catalina Classic (“The Granddaddy of all Paddle Board Races”).
Another big pull for many residents of this community are the highly rated schools. The Manhattan Beach Unified School District has test scores ranked #3 in the state of California, according to California Department of Education statistics. Forbes ranked Manhattan Beach Unified as the sixth best School District in the country. According to a July 5, 2014, article in the Beach Reporter newspaper, the city of Manhattan Beach has more educated residents (according to percentage of residents with bachelor’s degree or higher) than any other suburban community of Los Angeles. Mira Costa High School has the privilege of being ranked in the top 1 percent of high schools nationally
