It’s a home that could have been built specifically for singer-songwriter Rufus Wainwright. The crooner just plopped down $1.45 million for a quaint, quirky, and cozy cottage in Hollywood Hills that perfectly suits his artistic style.
The fairytale-type abode was built in 1926, and is just as creative as Wainwright with its storybook footbridge, window nooks, and cubbyholes. The architecture of the home successfully combines Spanish, French, English, and Mediterranean styles. While the look and feel of the property is somewhat cottage-like, it’s certainly a lot more exquisite than your average shanty.
A long, steep stucco staircase is something you’d see in a Disney Princess movie, which leads to the home’s enchanting half-oval front door. The main foyer features exposed ceiling beams, and open up into various spaces.
The step-down living room is lined with wood floors, and features soaring ceilings with exposed beams, a fireplace, a built-in entertainment unit, a wonderful stained-glass window, and French doors that open up to a cozy balcony.
The light-filled dining room boasts diamond pane casement windows and is connected to the galley kitchen that is much more modern than one would find in a traditional cottage. The room has been updated with marble counters, top-of-the-line appliances, a farmhouse sink, an oversized refrigerator, a gourmet oven, and a breakfast nook with built-in seats. The room is lined with incredible slate stones on the floors, which makes it feel more like an outdoor space.
Winding stairs lead both to the lower and upper levels. The views of the surrounding greenery form the large, paned windows give the home a whimsical cottage-like quality.
The master bedroom on the upper level boasts a massive bay window, a separate dressing area that opens up to a terrace, and travertine all over, and shares the level with a den/office with built-in bookshelves. The ensuite guest bedroom is located on the lower level.
Just about every room in the 2,100-square-foot, 3-bedroom, 3-bathroom home gives way to majestic views of the lush green forest, which tops off the storybook-type setting. The large outdoor deck is perfect for dining, lounging, or listening to music to help Wainwright get inspired to write his next piece. There’s also a pond out back with a charming “lover’s bridge” according to the listing, which tops off the home’s dreamy aura.
Wainwright also continues to own a 1960s-built cottage in Montauk, NY, which he bought in late 2009 for $999,000.
He shares a child with friend Lorca Cohen, daughter of recently deceased musical legend Leonard Cohen.
