When it comes to celebrities, not only are we obsessed with their fashion decisions and who they’ve been photographed with, we’re also extremely curious about their homes and the types of immense profits they make when they sell.
While 2016 may have been a must for some celebrities, others A-listers made a killing on their real estate transactions in the Los Angeles area, and here they are.
Leonardo DiCaprio finally won his first Academy Award in 2016, but that was only the start of reasons to celebrate last year. Leo listed his remodeled Malibu beach home for $10 million last year, and although he hasn’t sold it just yet, there’s little doubt that he will make a killing on its sale. After paying nearly six times less for it at $1,775,000 back in 1998, there’s plenty of wiggle room for a big profit.
The two-story, three-bedroom, two-bathroom abode is located on Carbon Beach in Malibu. It might be modest in size at just 1,765 square feet, but it certainly makes up for it in its finishes and decor. The wide-plank wooden deck alone is worth the hefty price tag, given the stunning beachfront views of the Pacific, hot tub, and stairs lead directly to the beach.
The home features an open floor plan throughout the living room with a stone-faced fireplace, a dining room with wood-framed glass sliding doors that open to the deck, and an amazingly finished galley kitchen with herringbone-patterned backsplash tiles that extend all the way up to the ceiling.
The popular talk show host is becoming just as famous for her real estate flips as her television career. In 2016, Ellen made a sizable profit on her Hollywood Hills West home that she sold twice! Back in 2007, the “Finding Dory” star sold the same house for $10 million, then repurchased it in 2014 for $8.75 million. By August 2016, the home was for sale again and was sold for $9.9 million in an off-market deal.
Built in the 1950s, the 4,000-square-foot home has been completely remodeled from head to toe. Notable features throughout the five-bedroom, three-bathroom home include vaulted and beamed wood ceilings, glass walls that provide access to the outdoor space, flagstone flooring, city and canyon views, a pool, and a fire pit.
At the tender age of 11, Eve Plumb – who played middle sister Jan on the classic TV show “The Brady Bunch” – purchased her first home in Malibu in 1969 for $55,300. Hanging onto it for almost five decades was certainly worth it, as Ms. Plumb sold the home last year for $3.9 million. Considering the fact that $55,300 back then is equivalent to about $360,000 today, the actress pocketed over 10 times what she originally spent on the place.
The small 1950s-built 600-square-foot cottage is located along the private Escondido Beach in Malibu, and offers a very modest five rooms of living space. The single-level three-bedroom home features a 1.75-bathroom and an extra-long, wraparound deck that offers incredible views of the ocean and easy access to the beach.
Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber
While their home hasn’t sold just yet, if Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber get anywhere close to the $60 million price tag they’re asking for their stunning Malibu beach house, they’ll be swimming in profits. The couple purchased the home for $50.5 million in 2015, along with a large property next door that they still own. The property has been extensively renovated since they bought the home, and considering the fact that they’re listing it just over a year after buying it, it looks like this one might be a flip.
The 1944-built 5,254-square-foot beach home sits on more than three acres with spectacular views of the ocean along the Pacific Coast Highway. Glass walls open up to the oceanfront, wraparound decks and a footpath to the beach. The master suite features a fireplace, separate sitting area, his and her’s bathrooms, and a magnificent ocean view. Other distinguishing features of the property include a swimming pool, spa, outdoor pavilion, tennis court, and mature landscaping.
