The El Niño weather pattern has caused a great deal of concern in California, with government officials warning residents to get their homes prepared and to ensure they are current with their flooding insurance coverage. While some Californian’s still do not seem to be taking the warnings too seriously, there are many who are taking action as they contact professionals to help ensure their homes are protected this winter.
Weather-Proofing Services In Demand in California
Industry experts are reporting that the number of requests by homeowners for winterizing and weather-proofing services is on the rise in California. In fact, according to the Thumbtack platform for home services, requests for theses services are up by as much as 700 percent when compared to the same time last year. Some of the specific services that California residents are requesting for their homes include:
- Generator Installation
- Sliding Repair
- Garage Door Installation/Replacement
- Door Repair
When comparing November 2015 to October 2015 figures, generator installation requests have increased by 100 percent. Meanwhile, roofing requests are up by 700 percent while siding repair requests have increased by 400 percent. Requests for garage door installation/replacement, insulation and door repairs have all doubled.
In just a period of one week, generator installation services increased by 67 percent as requests for insulation repair/replacement rose by 160 percent. Sliding repair services increased by 71 percent during that same time period, while garage door installation/replacement increased by 42 percent and roofing rose by 36 percent. Door repair saw the least increase, but still rose by 21 percent during that one week.
Looking Ahead to El Niño
The El Niño weather pattern is expected to bring higher than average rainfall this winter, with most models predicting rainfall to come at historic levels. When El Niño brought heavy rainfall during the 1997/1998 winter, it resulted in numerous landslides, downed trees and other hazards. Therefore, it is important for homeowners to be properly prepared to keep their homes protected from the predicted weather.
Many cities throughout the state are also implementing multiple methods to provide residents with emergency information, including using text message alerts, email and social media. State officials are also putting together informational videos and other tools to help ensure residents are safe and their homes are protected.
