When most of us think back on the family homes we grew up in, visions of a quant setting in a modest home often come to mind. When you’re a member of the Goldwyn family, one of Hollywood’s most illustrious film families, quite a different vision is conjured.
Those visions might consist of running throughout a grandiose mansion that sits on two acres of Beverly Hills land, while classic film stars such as Charlie Chaplin and Katharine Hepburn duke it out on the tennis court. This home, and all of the wonderful memories it holds, is officially on the market for a whopping sum of $39 million.
In 1934 Samuel Goldwyn Sr. commissioned the construction of the home by famed architect Douglas Hoonold. Goldwyn was the founder of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studio, and he frequently used his sanctuary to get ahead in the movie business. He would entertain famous guests, including regulars Hepburn and Chaplin, and was known to mortgage the home in order to get funding for certain movie projects.
“I’m often asked what it was like to be part of the old Hollywood,” Goldwyn’s son, Samuel Goldwyn Jr. told Los Angeles Times in 1995. “What people want to hear is how I was dangled on Clark Gable’s knee. But, what I remember most is the days my father’s movies were paid off.”
Pay off they did. Goldwyn was able to hang on to his dreamy abode, producing such films such as “The Best Years of Our Lives” and “Wuthering Heights.” In 1974, Goldwyn Sr. passed away at 94, leaving the property to his son who produced successful movies such as 1988’s “Mystic Pizza” and 2013’s “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” while he lived in the home throughout his adult life. Goldwyn Jr. died in January 2015 at the age of 88 years old, leading to the Goldwyn estate to list the home in March.
A Beverly Hills Luxury Dream Home
This Beverly Hills home is certainly one fit for Hollywood royalty. The property spans almost 11,000 square feet, and features an exquisitely landscaped lawn, a rose garden, an inviting swimming area with a pool and pool house, a massive tennis court and a gated motor court.
The mansion itself is quite the masterpiece. The Georgian-themed home features six bedrooms and five bathrooms. Among amenities offered on the property are a home gym with full workout facilities and, naturally, a 35-millimeter screening room that brings viewers back to a different period in Hollywood history.
The home has ample space for guests. In addition to a guest suite in the main home with its own entrance, there is also a guest apartment located above the garage.
One of the most beautiful rooms in the home is the formal dining room, which invites the outside in with French doors that open out onto a trellis-covered patio and the exquisite grounds beyond.
