Big changes are on the horizon for actor Patrick Dempsey, and the sale of a picturesque property in Malibu is among them. The actor, who recently ended an 11-year run on “Grey’s Anatomy” and is in the midst of a divorce from his wife, listed a stunning Malibu property at 29715 Cuthbert Road that was once featured in Architectural Digest for the hefty price tag of $14.5 million.
Having been featured in a publication of architecture renown, it is no wonder that the home has a storied history involving design and art. The home was built in 1972, designed by famed architect Frank Gehry for abstract painter Ron Davis. It features many facets that have become synonymous with Gehry, including jutting angles, asymmetrical picture windows, large spaces divided by oddly intriguing geometric accents and corrugated metal siding.
“We were looking for a little land and space, and a house with some architectural significance,” Dempsey said to Architectural Digest back in March 2014. “The exterior’s simplicity appealed to me, and the inside felt very expansive and calming. Everywhere you looked there was something visually pleasing.”
The Dempseys purchased the property for $7 million in 2009 and immediately set to work transforming the five acres of land and nearly 5,500-square foot home to reflect their family’s style and needs. The outside was made a family fun zone. The space was outfitted with a broad lawn for soccer games, an alfresco kitchen, including a pizza oven, an outdoor dining area and enclosures for the family’s mini farm with chickens, miniature donkeys, rabbits, goats, pigs and a rescued African tortoise.
The water conservation-friendly space also eschews green space for pea gravel and cobblestones. Raised planting beds provide ample space for vegetable and flower gardening, however.
A Comfy Malibu Home for Inspired Living
The home itself exudes a casual comfort that tends to have an inspirational effect. The two-story residence features only three bedrooms but has a myriad of communal spaces amid its open floor plan, which features partial walls, towering ceilings and multiple fireplaces.
The home’s features emphasize the great beauty of the California wilderness just beyond its doors. Warm honey tones and earthy flooring help to bring the outdoors in, while still maintaining a clean, cozy vibe within the home. Jillian Dempsey maintained a sculpture studio and jewelry workshop within the home. The makeup artist found inspiration in living every day in such a beautiful space.
“The house is very warm and communal, and all the vibrant spaces that Gehry devised really inspire creativity,” Jillian said to Architectural Digest.
Originally designed by Gehry as an artist’s loft, the home features plenty of large windows and expansive spaces, many of which change throughout the day as the light changes. In addition to the massive main home, the property also features an airstream trailer, which can be used as a getaway from the communal space of the home.
