Considering remodeling a home before selling it? Design trends shift each season and home owners can capture the most talked-about trends in their decor with little effort. Southern California homes can embrace all the most popular style trends, including natural elements, contrasting and metals.
“Although I embrace the traditional and veer towards designs that transcend any fad, I also welcome the fresh energy that the au courant can bring to a project,” Toronto-based designer Jessica Kelly, said. She continued, noting this year’s hottest home design trends: “It’s all about contrasts, from pairing classic with contemporary to the timeless combination of black and white.”
Instead of decorating a home in classic, contemporary, rustic or modern decor, many decorators are saying that blending multiple styles is a great way to add character and depth to any home. Take for example a home that is mostly classic. A simple sofa and traditional rug can receive a bit of oomph with an ultra-modern coffee table or accent chair.
Speaking of giving the home a visual pop, home owners can incorporate a visual element into their spaces that will add dimension, such as surface treatments in metallic, pearl, gold or silver. For a real visual punch, consider adding a treatment to the ceiling, which is becoming a huge trend in celebrity homes. Causing people to look upward in the home gives the design a whole new element of surprise that many home owners tend to overlook.
Natural wood and other elements are incredibly popular in interior design, which makes sense as more people are blending outdoor and indoor living with one another.
As noted by the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal: “This season’s strong trend toward wood textures pairs the warmth, richness and texture of real wood with limitless design flexibility. Think wood-textured textiles, tree-printed wallpapers and embossed soaps that look like wood. Installing engineered wood ceilings and wainscoting can bring the unique look of reclaimed wood into any environment.”
Bringing rocks and minerals, such as a stainless steel backsplash in the kitchen or rock-inspired decorations will help to bring the outdoors inside. At the same time, this look can really give a home a more natural, relaxing feel, which can be great for home owners who spend a lot of time in urban settings.
Patterns Atop Patterns
Patterns are a great way to make an impact in any room in the home, but many people used to consider patterns an accent rather than the focus of the room. Large-scale patterns have inched their way into trendy designs and 2014 is no different. Textiles, rugs, wall art and even wallpaper are simple ways to bring in patterns. While contemporary design can mean multiple patterns are utilized in the home, it’s important to not over do it. Stick to patterns with similar colors and then incorporate one or two accent shades.
