Each fall, beer lovers flock to local Oktoberfest celebrations to enjoy seasonally brewed libations and enjoy traditional German delights. Revelers can sample some of the best beers in the area while also enjoying festive nosh such as bratwurst and schnitzel. Some of the most posh places to enjoy the Oktoberfest fun can be found in and around Los Angeles. These are just a few of the great places in Southern California to enjoy the Oktoberfest celebrations.
Biergarten is a non-tradition spin on the traditional German beer hall. Neil Kwon spent his life as a part of the Chinatown scene and when he founded Biergarten in 2010 he set out to create a spot with roots in the conventional beer halls of Berlin and Munich. Biergarten offers a unique spin by presenting German cuisine with a Korean flare. Brats and beer are enjoyed with Korean fare such as fried chicken, kimchi short rib fried rice as well as burgers of all kinds. There is an extensive beer list that grows when Oktoberfest comes around.
The Red Lion Tavern
The Red Lion Tavern is located in the Silver Lake neighborhood of LA and offers up some of the best Oktoberfest has to offer. The back patio of the tavern is where the magic happens, with an obvious nod to Bavaria through imagery of the Berlin bear and a mural of traditional Germans raising a glass in celebration. The October menu highlights schnitzel and sausage alongside Hofbrau Oktoberfest, which is considered “the original beer of Bavarian kings.” No Oktoberfest would be complete without live music, which will be livening up the patio through October.
Oktoberfest may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of the Standard downtown, however the Standard Biergarten simply cannot be missed. Atop the Standard, you enter the Biergarten through what looks like a giant birdhouse. There you will receive your entrance ticket, which can be traded for a giant pretzel, delicious wurst or tasty strudel to be enjoyed alongside your favorite Bavarian pint.
This unique biergarten is a famed piece of the Westwood neighborhood. Founder Abraham Berookhim claims that with Steingarten he “planted a California beer garden,” which includes a communal style dining hall, retractable roof, patio with fire pit, and of course, a full bar with many Oktoberfest beer options.
This Mid-City West biergarten offers a wide range of German brews, served with traditional German fare like schnitzel, sausages and warm homemade pretzels. The bar includes an outside communal table, where your canine friends are welcome. There are 35 beers on tap as well as many wine offerings. Spend the evening enjoying ping-pong and Oktoberfest festivities that include live music, food and drink specials, and a traditional first tap ceremony.
