December can be a bit of a mixed bag for Southern California luxury home owners. While its lovely to have shorts and sweatshirt weather when much of the rest of the country is bundled up to brave the elements of snow, sleet and wind, it can feel somewhat disconcerting to celebrate the holidays without a bit of snow to build a jolly snowman.
Luckily, many communities from Los Angeles to San Diego pick up where the weather leaves off to help residents get in the holiday spirit by putting up spectacular lights displays. If you’re looking for a little illumination to help you get into the holiday spirit, here are a few of the best places to catch a killer lights display in Southern California.
Christmas Tree Lane, Altadena
Although much of Southern California may be known for its breezy palm trees, the area happens to have its fair share of conifers as well. Every year the city of Altadena covers a mile-long driveway of cedars, transforming it into Christmas Tree Lane, a brilliant tribute to a most beloved symbol of the season. The site is one of the most beautiful in the area and is the only botanical landmark on the state registry, a true testament to how much local residents really cherish Christmas Tree Lane.
Wilshire Boulevard, Beverly Hills
What 5th Avenue is to New York during the holidays, Wilshire Boulevard is to Beverly Hills and greater Los Angeles. The city goes all out to decorate its main drag, making it a must-see spectacle for any holiday enthusiast. Rope lights swirl around the trunks of palm trees that line the street while others arc across the span of the street. Even the elegant and extravagant Beverly Wilshire Hotel gets into the spirit of things with a stunning display of lights both on the facade and indoors.
Christmas Boat Parade, Newport Beach
If you’re a nautical nut then the Christmas Boat Parade in Newport Beach is a must for the holiday season. Boaters deck their ships in holiday lights and decorations ranging from classic to zany. Over 100 vessels parade around the 14-mile circuit in Newport Harbor from Wednesday, December 17, to Sunday, December 21. The parade is free to all that flock to the shores, however there are reserved seats and dining packages available at dockside restaurants and bars.
Belardo Lights, San Diego
In the Tierrasanta section of San Diego is a homemade holiday lights display that would put Clark Griswold to shame. The home is owned and operated by Randy Schimka, a father who painstakingly puts up miles upon miles of lights and decorations, and synching them to a special radio station playing christmas music. The light adventure began in 2006, when Schimka sought to give his two autistic sons their own light show for the holidays, but has since grown into a heartwarming tradition that has begun to raise funds and awareness for various autism projects.
