One of the greatest aspects of living in the beautiful state of California is easy access to a fun, luxurious weekend away at a location that boasts world-class wine, breath-taking views and that easy-going California vibe. While many Southern California home owners head up north to Napa or Sonoma to experience a relaxing weekend in wine country, these types of vacations can quickly devolve from into frenzied trips from vineyard to vineyard, trying to squeeze every last drop from the region that put the United States on the map for winemaking.
Instead of journeying all the way up north, many home owners in the southern portion of the state might want to think about venturing to another town where fine wine, good food and great times are abundant: Los Olivos. Being just an hour’s drive from Santa Barbara, Los Olivos is the perfect place to get away from it all without having to worry about missing something on the other side of town.
The beauty of this destination as a getaway is its size. Los Olivos is a tiny town that radiates just a few blocks outside of its main drag. However, what it lacks in size it makes up for in variety and flavor. The town is home to numerous tasting rooms and restaurants, most of which are nestled within close proximity of each other so the car can be left in the hotel parking lot throughout the trip.
The Fess Parker Wine Coutnry Inn and Spa is the perfect locale to hang your hat for a few days. The inn features 19 rooms, including the Marcella, Crockett and Parker Suites which feature large living rooms, gas fireplaces throughout, and Jacuzzi tubs.
Los Olivos Offers A Bit Of History And Intrigue… And A Lot of Wine
When not imbibing at one of the city’s 30 tasting rooms, visitors can take time to learn about the city’s intriguing sites. The inn, for example, is run by the family of Fess Parker, an actor who rose to fame in the 1950s and 1960s as Daniel Boone and Davy Crockett. Parker established a winery in his name in the 1989, expanding into a hotel in 1998. Another local site with a claim to fame is the Los Olivos Cafe, which was made famous in the movie Sideways.
Aside from its recognition on the silver screen, Los Olivos has a charm that is sure to intrigue visitors without being too overwhelming. Visitors can do a cycling tour of local wineries, play golf at one of the nearby courses or take in a relaxing afternoon at Cachuma Lake.
