With the madness of the holidays almost officially over, New Year’s Eve is the perfect occasion to let loose, reflect on the year that has passed and make plans for the year that is coming. Luckily for San Diego luxury home owners, the city is home to a number of celebrations that appeal to young, old, adventurous and low-key. If you haven’t yet configured your own plans for the occasion, here are a few suggestions divvied up by lifestyle for ringing in the new year in San Diego.
For the family
Families with younger children might want to check out Pajama Jam: NYE Family Night Out at The New Children’s Museum at 200 West Island Avenue in downtown San Diego. This massive pajama party features a delicious dinner and NYE themed art activities, games, music and a countdown balloon drop. There’s plenty of fun for all ages as adults can enjoy a hosted bar and the opportunity to bid on prices in a silent auction that benefits the museum. The party begins at 5 p.m. and goes until 8 p.m., so parents wanting to get some time in with the kiddos will still be able to head out for adult celebrations later on.
For the adventurous
If after you’ve rung in the new year you’re still having a little trouble waking up to the reality of 2015, take the plunge into the waters of the ocean at the Del Mar Lifeguard Association’s Penguin Plunge. Although this may not be as extreme as other plunges in colder climates, this is still an exhilarating tradition where a group of fearless “penguins” run into the chilly ocean in a symbolic washing away of the past year. The event is held at 17th Street Station in Del Mar and is free to all participants. Warm coffee and doughnuts are provided afterwards.
For the nautical nut
New Year’s Eve doesn’t get anymore San Diego-esque than celebrating on a yacht cruising the Bay. The California Spirit Yacht will be hosting a moonlight New Year’s Eve cruise that will include breathtaking views of the city and bay at night, two DJs and multiple dance floors to get your groove on. Tickets are available for just one or for whole entourages and VIP treatment.
For the fine diner
Foodies who want to get a quiet but delectable meal in before the raucous festivities may want to venture out to 1500 OCEAN at Hotel Del Coronado. In addition to the stunning ocean views from the dining room, guests will be served up a delectable four-course meal from chef Meredith Manee. Some of the dishes expected to be on the menu include roasted, stuffed leg of lamb and vegetable wellington. Wine pairings are also offered with the meal to make the experience exquisite on all levels.
