Paying for a piping hot cup of coffee in the morning has become a ritual for many Laguna Beach luxury home owners. It’s all part of the morning routine: get the kids in the car, drop them off at school and make a pit-stop at Starbucks on PCH to grab a cup of joe. In an effort to make the experience even more luxurious, Starbucks recently debuted its all-metal luxury gift card that costs a whopping $450. And they sold out in seconds!
This is the second year in a row that Starbucks has offered the limited-edition card in conjunction with Gilt.com. According to Starbucks’ description of the handcrafted payment method: “Each card is hand-assembled, features a gorgeous artisan rose base metal and rose-colored coating.” And to drive demand for them, Starbucks only created 1,000 of the cards, which quickly sold out.
In fact, people took to eBay with the cards they purchased, with some listed for upwards of $2,000. Shortly after the cards sold out, there were more than 200 eBay listings, playing up the “limited edition” aspect and asking outrageous prices.
Alexis Maybank, Gilt Groupe co-founder and chief business development and strategy officer, said: “It took just seconds this year to sell out, which was phenomenal. We call them shopping athletes for a reason. Our customers are savvy and fast, and they were refreshing the page constantly. The second it opened up, they bought it.”
While this may seem like a steep price to pay for a gift card, Starbucks says that each of the cards comes pre-loaded with $400 of credits. So, really, you’re just paying $50 for the fancy gift card. And think of all the Frappuchinos, lattes and hand-shaken iced teas you could purchase with that much credit! Additionally, those who pony-up the money for the fancy gift card will automatically be given gold status in the My Starbucks Rewards program.
Cards are registered to the program, and each time you use the card to pay for your caffeine fix, Starbucks keeps track of your purchases. Typically, it takes 30 stars during a 12-month period to earn this status, which offers a free drink or food item after each set of 12 stars you earn. Other perks include a free item on your birthday, free refills on brewed coffee and iced tea and a discount at the online Starbucks store.
At Starbucks, being a gold member entitles you to a free birthday treat, a 15 percent off coupon at StarbucksStore.com, free refills on iced or brewed coffee and tea and a frequent buyer program with stars. And if you weren’t able to procure an all-metal card, don’t worry, the normal plastic ones are still available and work just fine.
Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz went on to say: “Our Starbucks card had its best holiday season in history, as measured by any metric, with more than $1 billion loaded during Q1, the most ever loaded onto any kind of Starbucks card.”
