With its relatively small population and beachfront location, La Jolla is a popular location for those who are looking for exclusivity, privacy and luxury. In addition to being one of the most celebrated resort towns in San Diego, La Jolla is also home to a number of chic neighborhoods.
Among these is the exquisite community of Bird Rock.
Unlike many of the area’s bigger cities, which are largely located in the north, Bird Rock is situated in the southwesterly corner of La Jolla and to the north of Pacific Beach. In addition to being surrounded by the Pacific Ocean, the foothills of Soledad Mountain can be accessed to the east while the southern boundary is defined by Turquoise Street. Due to its location and smaller size with just 1,400 to 1,500 single-family homes, the community offers a distinctive atmosphere with individual charm.
Living the Resort Lifestyle at Bird Rock
While the luxury homes of Bird Rock boast a whole host of amenities for homeowners to enjoy, the community also features a number of public amenities. Among these are the three public parks found within the neighborhood. These parks include Calumet Park, La Jolla Hermosa Park and Bird Rock Park. Bird Rock Park, which adjoins the elementary school, features an athletic field and play equipment. Calumet Park, which is located above an ocean bluff, offers plenty of green space and benches for relaxing. Due to the beautiful views the park provides, it is a popular location for weddings. It also overlooks as well-known site for surfing known as Rock Pile.
Known to locals as either Helene Henkel Park or Rock Park, La Jolla Hermosa Park is a pocket park featuring a table, some benches, a gravel surface and views of the rocky coast. While the community of Bird Rock technically does not have any sandy beaches, a stairway from La Jolla Hermosa Park provides access to Tourmaline Beach to the south. The park also boasts five coastal viewpoint overlooks.
The town’s merchant district, which encompasses 3.5 blocks stretching along La Jolla Boulevard from Midway Avenue to Camino de la Costa, boasts nearly 100 businesses offering a variety of personal and professional services.
The Restaurant Row area is also home to a delectable array of restaurants designed to satisfy even the most discriminating tastes. Whether you are in the mood for a casual dining experience or dining in a sophisticated, upscale restaurant, you are sure to find it along Restaurant Row.
Due to the relatively small size of the community, Bird Rock’s residents also tend to be close-knit. As part of this community togetherness, Bird Rock hosts a number of community events throughout the year. Some of the community’s annual events include the Beaumont Avenue Fourth of July Parade, the Community Picnic in August and the Halloween Window Painting event in October.
