In early December, Pantone 18-1438, better known as Marsala, made headlines when the world-renowned color authority made the hue the color of the year. Since the announcement, designers and home decor enthusiasts have been scrambling to incorporate the earthy wine red into their on-trend homes.
“This hearty, yet stylish tone is universally appealing and translates easily to fashion, beauty, industrial design, home furnishings and interiors,” said Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute, in a statement about Marsala.
Where better to feature Marsala than in the wine-loving, luxury communities of Southern California such as Malibu. If you are looking to fire up your own luxury home’s decor with the color of the year, here are a few tips for decorating with Marsala.
Use robustly in the kitchen and dining room
According to most color psychologists, red is a hue that inspires great appetite and passion, making it a great color for robust use in rooms such as the kitchen and dining room. It seems this was just the type of color Pantone was looking for in this year’s selection process.
“Nurturing and fulfilling, Marsala is a natural fit for the kitchen and dining room – making it ideal for tabletop, small appliances and linens throughout the home,” Eiseman continued.
While an earthy red may be a little overwhelming in any other room in the home, the kitchen and dining room offer plenty of opportunity to embrace the drama and warmth of the color in high doses. Consider purchasing appliances that evoke the hue or let the drama take center stage with a beautiful Marsala table cloth and chair cushions. If your kitchen has a bench with a cushion, consider picking out a Marsala fabric to recover the cushion with.
Glasses and dining ware can also serve as beautiful accents in a kitchen or dining room. When used during a gathering, Marsala-colored plates have also been known to inspire voracious appetites, for both food and conversation.
Use as accents throughout the rest of the home
The strong and impactful qualities of Marsala make it an exceptional statement color throughout the decor of any home. Incorporate it in simple, but meaningful accents throughout your home and your guests will awe at the effortless elegance you’ve instilled throughout your luxury home.
Nothing says luxury quite like a plush rug or dramatic couch in the living room. Marsala’s luscious tendencies make it a color that home owners and guests will want to wrap themselves up in, so don’t be afraid to use it in larger, interchangeable pieces. Textured curtains or window arrangements in Marsala can also make for a sufficiently luxuriant space at minimal cost and hassle.
