There has been a great deal of talk for some time now about building a high-speed rail that will connect Los Angeles to San Francisco. Unfortunately, the pace of this project seems to be moving at a snail’s pace, leaving many to wonder if it will ever really happen. In the meantime, China has moved in with plans to bring a bullet train to the area, but with a very different destination in mind: Las Vegas. The project also appears to be moving at a much faster pace, with plans to have the train in place as early as next year.
Connecting Southern California to Las Vegas
According to recent reports, China Railway International has embarked on a joint venture with XpressWest to build a high-speed rail from Las Vegas to Southern California. While the venture is being billed as a connecting train from Los Angeles to Las Vegas, however, the reality is that it will actually connect Vegas to Victorville, which is located about 85 miles away from Los Angeles in the desert. Nonetheless, the proposed plan does offer many benefits to those who want to make a quick trip out to Sin City.
By simply taking a 90 minute Metrolink trip to Victorville from Los Angeles, the new bullet train will reportedly get passengers to Las Vegas in just 80 minutes for only $89. Going at speeds of up to 150 mph, the train will offer a smooth ride through the dessert.
Dealing with Railroad Infrastructure
Getting the high-speed rail connecting Los Angeles to San Francisco has been largely derailed by the fact that the city lacks the necessary railroad infrastructure, which means the cost of setting up such a system increases exponentially. In all likelihood, this is why the Chinese train connecting Southern California to Las Vegas will originate in Victorville rather than Los Angeles.
Xpress West’s plans for the 230-mile train line were approved in 2011, but the company has been seeking a financial backer to assist with the project. China Railway International, which was created by Chinese railway operator China Railway, has come on board to assist with this aspect of getting the project off the ground.
China Railway created China Railway International with the specific purpose of expanding its high-speed rail construction to other countries now that it has mostly completed construction of its railways throughout China. The railway connecting Southern California to Las Vegas will be the first of the company’s high-speed railway projects in the United States. A total of $100 million of initial capital has reportedly already been invested in the project.
Given all that Southern California has to offer, it is not much of a surprise that China Railway International would be interested in a project that connects the region to Las Vegas.
