It has long been well-known by local residents that Los Angeles is home to many fine restaurants, but the superb quality of area restaurants got another important nod when Bon Appetit magazine chose four area restaurants as among the top 50 in the country. Two of thee restaurants, Venice’s Gjusta and Petit Trois, earned the number two and number three positions on the list.
Described by Bon Appetit as a juice bar-bakery-deli-pizzeria-coffee shop-smokehouse, Gjusat took the number two position on the list. The restaurant serves breakfast all day as well as a wide variety of sandwiches for lunchtime diners. Rotisserie options, fish, salads and soups are all on the menu, as are pastries such as baklava, fruit pies and scones. Sandwiches are served on fresh baked bread, which can also be ordered separately, such as tomato and herb focaccia, sesame wheat and olive and herb sourdough. Located at 320 Sunset Avenue, Gjusat is open Monday through Sunday from 7:00 am until 9:00 pm.
Open seven days per week for lunch and dinner, the French bistro of Petit Trois took the number three position on Bon Appetit’s list. The restaurant offers a relatively short list of appetizers, entrees, side dishes and desserts. It also boasts an extensive list of beers, wines, cocktails and other drinks. The bistro is located at 718 North Highland.
The creative and soulful Alimento located in historic Silver Lake was also included in the top 50 list of restaurants. Ingredients used at the restaurant are carefully sourced from local artisans and growers, while the menu boasts small plates, pastas and large platters that are meant to be shared. The restaurant also offers an eclectic wine list featuring lesser-known varietals and hard-to-find wines from small producers along with a rotating selection of microbrews from the U.S. and Italy. Alimento is located at 1710 Silver Lake Boulevard.
Jon & Vinny’s
Jon & Vinny’s Italian at 412 North Fairfax was also included in this year’s list. Open seven days a week from 8:00 am until 10:00 pm, the restaurant offers a wide array of breakfast, lunch and dinner options.
The number one restaurant on the list was AL’s Place in San Francisco. The other top ten restaurants were Semilla in Brooklyn, New York; Parachute in Chicago, Illinois; Dai Due in Austin, Texas; Kindred in Davidson, North Carolina, Rintaro in San Francisco, California, Manolin in Seattle, Washington and Milktooth in Indianapolis, Indiana.
To develop the list of top 50 restaurants in the country, Bon Appetit Deputy Editor Andrew Knowlton and Editor-in-Chief Adam Rapoport traveled to more than 500 restaurants over a period of four months. According to Knowlton, he prefers those restaurants with someone behind them who is passionate about food and who is not interested in a “concept” restaurant. Instead, he prefers small, independent restaurants that are somewhat quirky.
