Despite having a rich artistic history, Compton hasn’t even had its own movie theater in decades. In fact, just this past year, residents had to travel to the neighboring cities to go see the film Straight Outta Compton. To address this issue, the city is planning to construct an entertainment complex that will offer a variety of facilities available for those who want to explore the arts further.

Bringing the Arts Back to Compton

To help Compton residents more thoroughly enjoy the arts, the city is hoping to build a complex featuring a multiplex, a youth-focused performing arts center and a multipurpose hall along with a 500-car parking structure. This structure will be built in partnership with Los Angeles County as a park-and-ride for the Blue Line. Altogether, the performing arts center is expected to have 75,000-square-feet of space, with planned features including a dance studio, a performing arts stage, a youth fitness and homework center and a recording studio. The complex will also feature a 14-screen movie theatre as well as a 50,000-square-foot, two-story multipurpose hall that will host community events, bingo, casino operations and other special events.

Revitalizing a Parking Lot

In addition to helping to make the arts more accessible to Compton residents, the project would also make use of a parking lot currently located at the Crystal Hotel. Situated next to the Compton Artesia Blue Line Station, the 6.36-acre site is owned by the same business that owns the Crystal Hotel. According to reports, the company is possibly interested in selling the property. If so, the city expects to be able to purchase the land and hire a contractor and project manager to manage the project build at a total cost of $35 million.

The Celebrity Touch

To pay for the expense of the entertainment complex, Dr. Dre has reportedly committed all of the royalties from his Compton album to go toward the project. How much he will make in royalties from the album is still unknown. Released last August, Compton is Dr. Dre’s third official album. Referred to as a “shockingly strong” album by critics, the album is the first of the artist’s albums to be released in 16 years.

Selling 295,000 album units in its first week, the album debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200 and at number one on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. As of January 2016, the album has sold 502,000 in the United States. It has also been certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America. It has also experienced a great deal of success in the UK, debuting at number one on the UK Albums Chart after selling 45,721 copies. Since Dr. Dre released the album on iTunes and Apple Music two weeks before releasing the physical album, it was also the first album in the UK to hit number one on the UK Albums Chart before the physical release. The album has since been certified Gold by the British Phonographic Industry.
