The Annenberg Space for Photography
This collection of world-class photography is dedicated to displaying some of the best digital and print photography in the country. Included in the collection is a number of state-of-the-art, high-definition digital pieces that are displayed alongside traditional prints created by some of the world’s most renowned photographers. There are also photos from a number of emerging photographic talents.
Bergamot Station is home to over 30 art galleries in Santa Monica. Originally a railroad station, it has since been transformed into a hugely popular destination for art of all kinds. With many galleries to peruse, visitors can spend an entire day viewing a wide range of art genres and mediums. The Santa Monica Museum of Art is also located at Bergamot Station.
The Franklin D. Murphy Sculpture Garden
The Franklin Murphy Garden is one of the most wide-ranging sculpture gardens in the country. Located on the campus of UCLA, this sculpture lover’s mecca is part of the Hammer Museum. The garden was started in 1967 and currently sits on more than five picturesque acres. There are over 70 world-class sculptures by artists including Jean Arp, Alexander Calder, Auguste Rodin and Henri Matisse.
The Getty Center
Probably the areas most well-know art museum, the Getty Center is located in the Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles and is one of two locations of the Paul Getty Museum. This branch of the two-part museum is home to pre-20th-century European paintings, drawings, illuminated manuscripts, sculpture, and decorative arts. It also houses 19th- and 20th-century American, Asian, and European photographs. Moving outside of the museum’s walls, visitors can take in the outdoor sculpture space that is settled among terraces and gardens.
The Hammer Museum
The Hammer Museum is also affiliated with UCLA and is both an art museum and cultural center. The museum has established an “artist-centric and progressive” voice through the exhibitions and public programs that are a foundation of the museums daily offerings. The museum hosts a revolving schedule of programs throughout the year so visitors can check back for new and exciting offerings.
The Los Angeles County Museum of Art
The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) exhibits a collection of works that provide a wide-ranging look into history and geography, while also highlighting LA’s eclectic population. It is the largest art museum in the western US, with a collection of over 120,000 pieces. There is also a constantly changing film and concert series.
Museum of Contemporary Art
The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) is the only area museum dedicated solely to contemporary art. Pieces and installations at MOCA date back no later than 1940, and the museum has evolved into one of the country’s most renowned permanent collections of modern art. The museum is spread over three facilities: MOCA Grand Avenue, the Geffen Contemporary at MOCA, and MOCA Pacific Design Center.
The Norton Simon Museum
The Norton Simon Museum is viewed as one of the most exclusive private art collections in the world. The collections include: European paintings, sculptures, and tapestries; Asian sculptures, paintings, and woodblock prints; and sculpture gardens displaying many sculptors’ work in a landscape setting around a large pond. The museum also is home to the Norton Simon Theater, which provides film programs, lectures, symposia, and dance and musical performances year-round.
