Several interesting new homes have come on the Los Angeles market recently, including a city monument and the home of the Eddie and Alex Van Halen. Here is a look at a few of the most intriguing new homes to be listed.
Van Halen Brothers’ Home
The former home of the Van Halen brothers, Eddie Van Halen and Alex Van Halen, has been put on the market for $2.1 million. Built in 1951, the Buff & Hensman home boasts an exterior that is an excellent example of the Buff & Hensman modernist style. The interior can best be described as having a contemp-Santa Fe feel. Situated on a half-acre lot to the east of Eaton Canyon, the Van Halen brothers’ home features four bedrooms, three bathrooms, sliding glass walls, a heated swimming pool with a spa and a custom stained glass window created by artist Judy Jansen in 1990.
City Monument: Mt. Washington’s Modern Pilot House
Mt. Washington’s Pilot House was built by architects A. Quincy Jones and Whitney Smith before they began the renowned Brentwood community of Crestwood Hills. The purpose of building the home was to demonstrate that a well-designed home could be built on a steep hillside lot. Built in 1948, the home stretches across it corner lot and offers expansive views of the surrounding hills. Some of the home’s features include angled windows, wood floors and outdoor space with multiple patios and pools. The two-bedroom, 1,524-square-foot home, which as designed as a city monument in 2002, is on the market for $1.125 million.
Home of “Unbroken” WWII Hero Louis Zamperini
The Hollywood Hills home of “Unbroken” WWII Hero Louis Zamperini has been placed on the market for $1,999,500 for the first time in over 50 years. The 3,445-square-foot home, which features four bedrooms and three bathrooms, was one of the first homes in the Hollyridge Park development. Described as an English Revival cottage with gable thatched type roof, the home was designed to showcase incredible views from nearly every room. Some of the home’s features include the original dining room and fireplace, soaring ceilings, a sunroom offering views of downtown Los Angeles and an eat-in country kitchen with an adjacent breakfast room. The home also offers dual master suites with walk-in closets and separate dressing rooms, maid’s quarters and a workshop on the lower level. The home rests upon a 15,000-square-foot lot and features meandering pathways, terraced gardens, a semi-private driveway and gated entry. The home is also said to have been frequented by Angelina Jolie after she discovered she and Zamperini were neighbors.
Melanie Griffith Finds New Home
In related news, Melanie Griffith and Antonion Banderas recently sold their lavish Hancock Park estate. The home set new records when it sold for $15.947 million, which was the most expensive sale the area has seen. According to Variety magazine, Griffith has now moved to a $30,000 rental in the Outpost Estates section of Hollywood Hills. Boasting arched windows, numerous chandeliers and coffered ceilings, the new home is said to be a downsized version of the star’s previous home.
