Traveling overseas offers endless possibilities for fun and excitement. On the other hand, whether traveling for business or pleasure, overseas travel does come with a certain amount of danger. To ensure you stay safe as you travel overseas, here are a few tips to keep in mind.
Tip #1: Do Your Research
Perhaps the most important step you can take before traveling overseas is to do your research. Not only should you familiarize yourself with the region and where you will be traveling, but you should also become knowledgeable about the culture and the people. You should also check for any travel alerts or warnings by visiting the U.S. Department of State website. While on the website, you can also gather information about recommended vaccinations, local laws and customs and other important information that you should know before traveling.
Tip #2: Identify Important Landmarks
Whether you plan to visit landmarks and other tourist attractions or not, identifying important points of interest as they relate to your hotel will help reduce your chances of getting lost in a foreign country. You should also identify important transportation hubs and where they are located in relation to your hotel.
Tip #3: Register with the Government
To ensure you receive the necessary and proper protections from the U.S. government, register your trip through the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). When you register with the program, the embassy or consulate nearest to your destination will receive an alert. By providing this information beforehand, the State Department will be better capable of assisting you in the event of an emergency.
Tip #4: Gather Phone Numbers
In addition to registering with the government, you should also obtain the phone numbers for the embassy or embassies nearest to where you will be staying. You should also obtain local emergency numbers and keep them on your phone. Keep in mind that emergency services are different in every country, so familiarize yourself with how these services work in the country where you will be going.
Tip #5: Remain Aware
Once you arrive at your destination, make a conscious effort to remain aware of your surroundings at all times. Even if you are visiting an area that mainly attracts wealthy travelers and offers high levels of security, remaining aware of your surroundings is essential. Remember, criminals look for people who they think will make an easy target. Someone who is distracted or who does not appear confident will be placed high on the list of potential targets.
As part of remaining aware of your surroundings, be sure to avoid unmarked taxis. While these taxis may offer a cost benefit, taking any form of unregulated transportation can be quite dangerous. You should also avoid consuming alcohol in an unfamiliar environment, particularly early in your trip. If having a few drinks is on your “to do” list, wait until after you are more familiar with your destination to help avoid getting lost.
