Hospital safety is something none of us wants to think about until we are faced with a situation where we need medical help. Instead of being faced with the decision to choose a hospital in the midst of crisis, find out which of your local hospitals is the safest and the highest-ranked. Did you know that nationwide, as many as 400,000 lives are lost annually due to hospital error? According the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one out of every 25 hospital patients will contract a new infection during their stay.

In order to find out which hospitals earn higher marks in terms of safety, a watchdog group called the Leapfrog Group began to compile hospital data. Since 2012, Leapfrog has collected and analyzed data in order to issue hospital scores in California and nationwide. The number of A-rated hospitals in state of California rose to 43 percent at the tail end of 2016, which is the seventh-highest rate among states nationwide.

The Leapfrog Group has highlighted top performers like Kaiser Permanente, which regularly has some of the highest scores and shows minimal variation in scores across the 35 hospitals in the system. US News and World Report also ranked the healthcare giant as the eighth-best in the state. Other hospital systems receiving top marks from Leapfrog include Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian in Newport Beach and Inglewood’s Centinela Hospital Medical Center.

Here is a look at the hospitals noted as the best specifically in the Los Angeles area by US News and World Reports 2017 hospital rankings.

1. UCLA Medical Center

US News ranked UCLA Medical Center as the best hospital in the Los Angeles area. The hospital is nationally ranked in 15 adult specialties and 10 pediatric specialties including cancer, cardiology, endocrinology, neurology, pediatric cancer care, pediatric neurology, pediatric nephrology and several others.

2. Cedars-Sinai Medical Center

Ranked second in LA by US News, Cedars-Sinai received nation recognition in 11 adult specialties, including cardiology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, ENT, neurology, pulmonology and several others.

3. Keck Medical Center of USC

Keck Medical Center of the University of Southern California earned US New ranking of 3rd top hospital in LA. The medical center is nationally ranked in 7 adult specialties, including cancer care, cardiology, urology, geriatrics, nephrology, orthopedics and ophthalmology.

4. Huntington Memorial Hospital

Earning the fourth spot of best LA hospital is Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena. The hospital is also nationally ranked in 3 adult specialties – geriatrics, gynecology and neurology/neurosurgery.

5. University of California, Irvine Medical Center

UC-Irvine earned the fifth spot in the race for top-ranked hospital in Los Angeles. Situated in the nearby city of Orange, UC-Irvine is nationally ranked in the specialties of ENT and orthopedics.

If you are a resident of the Los Angeles area or looking to become one, knowing where you should turn in a time of crisis is important. The color of your home is the first thing people see when they first visit your home. Whether you are thinking about selling your home or you just want a change of pace for your family, exterior paint color says something about your home. Finding the right paint color can initially seem like a headache of a task. Do you want to opt for a neutral like beige or are you considering a pop of color?

Getting Started in Choosing an Exterior Paint Color

Before you jump in and try to choose a specific color, a good first step is to pin down a couple of color families that you gravitate toward. By identifying the color family you like best, you can start to narrow down your options. Having samples available that hit different shades of your color family will help you start to identify the ones you like the best. This process can take up to a few weeks to determine the right color.

Outdoor Color Trends

As trends come and go, homeowners and those looking to sell their homes often end up with more organic tones that warm and soften the homes exterior. Earth-toned greens and warm browns help to richen the color palette and give a subtle modern feel.

Testing Your Potential Paint Colors

Once you have identified the top few choices, it’s time to test. Testing your paint on a wall is often the best way to narrow down your choices to just one. What looks like a dark option on a color swatch in a well-lit home improvement store, may look very different when it spans a larger area. When you put paint testing swatches on your home, you should also pay attention to the sheen and finish, as those will also change the way you see the color on your home. Be sure to view your paint samples and material samples outside at various times throughout the day in different lighting. This will give you an idea of what your colors will look like under different conditions.

Choosing Accent Colors

Once you’ve chosen the main color for the exterior of your home, you’re not done yet. Next you will need to choose your accent colors. In addition to the main color, you will also have color options for the siding, trim, and roofing of your home. These are things that should be taken into account when choosing colors. Ideally, choose two colors for the home exterior when the siding is brick or stone. You will need to choose three colors when the siding will also be painted as the main color. Opt for complementary colors for the trim and accent color for doors, shutters, and decorative trim.

What Does Your Paint Color Say About You?

Your home’s style says a lot about your family. Is it casual, elegant, modern or historic? But what if the style of your home makes a neutral statement? This is where paint color can tell many tales. If your house lacks a style personality, paint it in colors that create a unique sense of style.

Best Exterior Paint Colors for Selling Your Home

Paint options when selling your home should help set the stage for your home. If your neighborhood is full of white houses, you might opt for a mid-tone instead of a dark color to stand out. Stay away from colors that might scare off potential buyers. Bolder color options can be used on smaller elements, like the front door or shutters. If your neighborhood has a certain appeal, while you want your home to make a statement, you don’t want it to be too loud.

Continuing our look into the best suburbs of Los Angeles (previous snapshots include Manhattan Beach and Hermosa Beach), we turn to Rolling Hills Estates. This charming town became Los Angeles County’s 60th municipality in September of 1957. During that first year, the population was just 3,500 residents. This small population upheld a common goal of keeping a sense of community grounded in the unique rural atmosphere. The equestrian lifestyle is foundational and can be seen throughout the town’s eponymous rolling hills, white fences, bridle trails, and wide-open spaces.

Rolling Hills Estates Neighborhoods

There are now 30 individual neighborhood areas within the community, each with its own unique charm, architectural style, and Homeowners’ Association. Each of the associations is designed to represent the interests of the citizens directly to the larger City Council. They also serve as neighborhood social organizations.

Quality of Life in Rolling Hills Estates

The community has evolved over the past fifty years but still represents the fundamental ideals of the founders. The City Council upholds their civic duty of staying abreast of the changing times and maintaining the interests of all residents. The overall emphasis in managing Rolling Hills Estates is grounded in protecting the rural residential character of the city.

Rolling Hills Estates Residents

The median housing cost in Rolling Hills Estates is $885,000. The average median age of homeowners in the city is 48 and 86 percent of residents own their home. The residents of this charmer are friendly, welcoming and help create a strong sense of community.

What to Do in Rolling Hills Estates

Despite the city’s humble beginnings, there is now plenty of shopping, entertainment and dining to keep residents entertained. Most of the hotspots are situated along the one-mile commercial district strip. There are open-air shopping plazas with a state-of-the-art movie theater, an ice rink, several local restaurants, national retailers, an arts scene and local merchants.

For those who love the outdoors, Rolling Hills Estates offers occupants many ways to enjoy the outdoors through recreational and sporting activities. The city owns six beautiful parks, maintains 25 miles of equestrian trails, and has 10 miles of bicycle paths. The city even has its own tennis club and stables.

Rolling Hills Estates Equestrian Lifestyle

With the citywide goal of preserving the original rural environment and equestrian lifestyle, you can see this mirrored everywhere you look.  Starting with the three-rail white fences found across the city, there are also public riding rings and the Peter Weber Equestrian Center, which is home to municipal boarding stables. Throughout the year, the city supports a range of equestrian-related activities for young and old alike.

For those who want to enjoy the natural beauty of the city, they can set out on the more than 25 miles of beautiful bridle trails. The Peter Weber Equestrian Center also offers access to 90 miles of beautifully manicured trails. They offer stalls for horse boarding in a full-care, high-amenity stable.

Continuing the trend toward smaller living, we are seeing space-efficient workspaces as similar opportunities to downsize. A “tiny office” is an excellent way to work in a private space and work with minimal interruption. Who would have thought that a simple backyard shed could be the newest trend in home offices? Now, these are not your run-of-the-mill drafty shed with dust and spiders. They are stylish spaces with all the luxuries of an office outside the home. Some are plumbed to include a sink and kitchen space. Others are simple spaces that allow you to meet with clients in privacy.

These “shedquarters,” as they have been dubbed, can serve as an office, an art studio, a space to meet with clients and everything in between. One of the biggest benefits to moving your office to the backyard is the possibility of working in peace. Many people who work from home complain that working amidst the chaos of family life can be a challenge. A shed-based office space gives you a place where you can focus on work during work hours.

Another benefit is the opportunity to “leave the office” at the end of the day. So many who work from home, even part-time, complain that having your work available in the home means that you work more than if you could leave the office at the end of the day. Your work is always there! Working out of a shedquarters-style office means you can log out, lock the door and be done with work for the day. No more staring at your desk and thinking of what needs to be done.

If you are thinking of creating your own shedquarters, there are a few things to keep in mind.

  • If your home office will house electronics, it is a good idea to consult with a professional builder to make sure your shed’s foundation is up to code for wiring and other structural issues.
  • You should also consult with any homeowners association to be sure that a backyard shed is permitted in your community.
  • If you plan to meet with clients, check with your local municipality to be sure that you are zoned for business use.

A backyard shed home office offers the flexibility and privacy you need to help your business flourish. With many different shapes and sizes to choose from, you can find the ideal space for your needs. Whether you are a yoga instructor looking for a small space to run classes or you are a high-level executive, you can build a shedquarters to meet your exact list of must-haves. These office spaces also add value to your home, by increasing your usable space. When you weigh the cost of renting off-site office space with the cost of building your shed-based office, it is a no-brainer.

If you are looking into buying a home in Southern California where you will have the space to create your very own shedquarters, we can help you find the perfect home. Our team of experts specialize in luxury homes in the most exclusive communities in Southern California.

Ichiro Suzuki, a professional baseball player for the Miami Marlins who hit the 3,000-hit mark last year, listed his downtown LA condo for sale for $2.349 million. It’s also simultaneously listed for lease for $7,000 a month. Suzuki is playing both sides of the field in an effort to see what kind of takers he can get.

Suzuki purchased the unit about 10 years ago for $2.2 million, so not much of a profit would be made should he sell it close to his asking price.

The unit is located in the Biscuit Company Lofts building, which was originally built in the 1920s as a factory and recently transformed into a modern live/work space. The 2,030-square-foot condo still holds it original industrial feel thanks to its exposed brick walls and ductwork.

The open floor plan includes two floors of living space, including one bedroom, a large common living area, and a modern all-stainless steel kitchen with an industrial-sized fridge. Light hardwood flooring lines the entire space. The soaring ceilings create an incredibly light and bright interior space.

The loft-style condo’s single bedroom is located on the second level that is accessed via a floating staircase, as is the master bathroom. There are another 1.5 bathrooms on the lower level. There is also a separate laundry area with a stacked washer and dryer.

Perhaps one of the most impressive features of the condo is the private 1,000-square-foot rooftop patio that provides breathtaking 360-degree views of the city all the way to the Pacific, which can also be enjoyed inside through the oversized windows.

Building amenities include a modern lap pool, a double-height gym room, and a fire pit. The unit also comes with two parking spaces.

In 2015, the Japanese-born baseball player moved out of his Central Park condo in New York after leaving the Yankees in favor of the Miami Marlins. The full-floor unit has 6-bedrooms, 6.5 bathrooms, 5,400 square feet of living space, and 360-degree views of Central Park.

The 43-year-old ex-Yankee clinched the American League battle title twice and has made 10 appearances in the annual All-Star Game over his impressive 16-year career in the majors.

Behind gates in the highly coveted Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles lies a southern Colonial-style home that was once the longtime residence of the late actress Patricia Barry. After being listed earlier this year at a price tag of $10.495 million, the home sold shortly after for $10.3 million. Barry paid $111,700 for the home way back in 1969.

Situated on approximately three-quarters of an acre, the 1937-built, two-story home is covered in white siding, striking black shutters, and intricate latticework at the front. During the time that Barry owned the property, she revamped the front of the home by adding a grand double-height atrium with a number of slender pillars.

Following a large, hedge-bordered circular driveway filled in with meticulously manicured grass is the stately front entrance. The 4,330 square feet of the home includes a main residence with four bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms, as well as a service wing that houses staff quarters with another bedroom and bathroom.

The center hall foyer boasts classic black-and-white checkerboard marble flooring, which leads to the living spaces of the home, including a living room with a fireplace, a hardwood floor-lined formal dining room, a study, a brick-floored sunroom, and a bar room covered in wood paneling.

The galley kitchen is lined with cherrywood cabinetry and a breakfast nook.

The master suite has a view of the backyard, which features a long red-brick deck with a seating area, and the sprawling greens up at the far end of the property to be greeted by a large swimming pool anchored by a large jacaranda tree.

Barry, who recently passed away in 2016 at the age of 93, was a regular on both the small and big screens, and typically starred opposite some of the legends of Hollywood, including Rock Hudson, Ronald Reagan, and Glenn Ford. She called the Brentwood estate home for almost half a century. Barry also rented some of her many homes in the LA area to high-profile Hollywood figures, including Paul Newman and Don Rickles.

Are you considering purchasing or selling luxury real estate in the Los Angeles area? If so, you shouldn’t use just any real estate brokerage. In this particular market, your best bet is to partner up with a team of experts who work exclusively in this niche market. It’s been on the market since 2015, but Jennifer Lopez’s Hidden Hills mansion has finally attracted the attention of a willing buyer and sold for about $10 million. The home went through a couple of price drops since initially being listed at $17 million. Early last year, the price was reduced to $12.5 million.

Lopez purchased the home with former husband Marc Anthony back in 2010 for $8.2 million.

Located on a 3-acre lot in the gated Ashley Ridge area of Hidden Hills, the 17,129-square-foot traditional-style estate features sprawling living spaces divided between two levels. Built in 1987, the home was totally gutted and renovated by Lopez.

There are two structures, including an 8-bedroom, 8.5-bathroom main home and an “entertainment wing” that can be accessed via a “breezeway” interior bridge. The exciting second structure comes equipped with a recording room, game room, bar, and a 20-seat home theater with a dramatic coffered ceiling reminiscent of an opera house. There’s also a one-bedroom, one-bathroom staff apartment with a full kitchen, as well as an expansive combination dance studio/gym room that is big enough to take memberships and accommodate the public.

The study room features a fireplace and breathtaking wood-paneling that covers the walls and expands throughout the ceiling. There are also formal and informal living spaces to enjoy, as well as a dining room with seating for 12.

The moss-green eat-in kitchen is offset by cream-colored counters, a farmhouse sink, breakfast bar, and large center island, and opens up to a spacious family room with a bar area.

The master suite has its own private terrace and sitting room, two walk-in closets, and dramatic onyx-floored ensuite bathroom.

There’s also a massive dressing room the size of an apartment, decked out in floor-to-ceiling mirrors, four walk-in closets, a massage room, hair and makeup stations, and Lopez’s infamous green Versace dress as the focal point in the center of the room (dress not included in the sale!).

The outdoor grounds include a resort-style swimming pool and spa, a covered lounging and dining area, play area, tennis court, and access to equestrian trails from the gorgeously manicured lawns.

The 8-car garage isn’t the only space to accommodate vehicles – there’s room for another 15 more on the huge motor court.

Right around the first price reduction, the 47-year-old triple threat dropped a whopping $28 million for an eye-popping Bel Air estate that she bought off actress Sela Ward, decked out with a mini-golf course and swimming pond. Veteran TV producer Don Mischer, who’s been behind numerous Emmy and Oscar award shows, just purchased a stately home in Bel-Air for $3.415 million, just a hair under the original $3.5 million asking price. The last time it changed hands was last year, when the property was sold for $2.152 million.

Tucked behind private custom gates and accessed via a long driveway, the modern, recently renovated 3-bedroom, 4.5-bathroom home sits on over an acre of well-manicured land. The 3,600-square-foot home boasts a bright and airy open floor plan.

The all-white exterior has nearly as many glass openings as it does closed walls, allowing tons of natural light to flow freely throughout the space.

The extra-long eat-in galley kitchen has more than enough room for a large island, and boasts custom European blonde oak cabinets and Italian marble counters.

The living room features an impressive fireplace surrounded by intricate geometric patterns, which is flanked on either side with massive doorways that provide the ultimate indoor-outdoor feel to the space.

Both the master bedroom and the adjoining master ensuite bathroom provide direct access to the outdoors via glass sliders. The massive walk-in closet features tons of space, thanks to its custom shelving. Don will have plenty of storage due to the plethora of closet space throughout the home.

Every bathroom in the home features incredibly unique tiling patterns that really bring the spaces to life.

The outdoor living space is lined with an ultra-modern saltwater pool and spa, fire pit, and dining area lined with mature trees and gorgeous landscaping. At the far end of the backyard is a unique seating area immersed among large steps incorporated into a retaining wall. There’s even a quaint picnic area tucked in a nook between living spaces outdoors, providing the perfect spot for a private meal or simply a relaxing cocktail. There’s also a three-car garage as well as plenty more parking space in the extra-wide parking court.

Mr. Mischer isn’t new in the luxury real estate game of LA. Last summer, he sold his longtime Beverly Hills home to British songstress Adele for $9.5 million. The home was originally listed in September 2015 for $10.75 million. He had purchased it back in 1991 for $2 million. The 6,600-square-foot, 4-bedroom, 6-bathroom home features a double-height entry, two formal living rooms, vaulted ceilings, French doors galore, stone terraces, a swimming pool, and a gazebo with a porch swing.
